collectives is a multi-fandom community that takes place on earth in a modern day setting. your characters can be from anywhere in the universe as long as they are currently living on earth. they can live in any city or country so long as you have the understanding that to interact with other characters they have to be willing to travel (this may be easier for some than others). we highly suggest using los angeles or nyc as a hub if your character cannot teleport, apparate or gain access to quick travel otherwise. if they're not from modern day earth (example: jon snow) you must adapt their background the best you can. this currently does not apply to aliens - if you wish to play superman, for example, you can say he's from krypton. as long as it doesn't interfere with earth's geography you can keep or change as you wish.
as a multi-fandom community we allow you to create a character based on any character you'd like from any piece of media out there. with a wide range of characters you can choose from you have options to come up with everything yourself or have a character with a strong background to base them on. with harry potter as an example, you can bring in harry potter himself or you can bring in someone like theodore nott who doesn't have too much of a background for you to base your character on. please continue to read for our rules regarding character creation and pbs:
whitewashing: before get started we're gonna address this from the get go. whitewashing is a 100% no. just don't do it. miles morales is not white. moana is not white. please aim to stay true to poc character's ethinicities as well. if you're unsure about a character's race or ethnicity in general please do some research. please notify us if you see anyone whitewashing. we don't know everything about every character out there and to make sure something doesn't slip by us we need your help. please don't assume we're allowing it without giving us a chance to change it. with that in mind, if you'd like to take a traditionally white character and make them a poc you're more than welcome.
sexualities need to stay canon when it comes to lgbtq characters. you can make any canonically character straight bi or gay - but not the other way around as this demographic is vastly under-represented in media.
supernatural, magic, abilities, the force, etc are all welcomed here. however they are 100% limited to your character's counterpart. if you do want to bring a character with no abilities like rachel green from friends you cannot give her superpowers or abilities. if you want to bring peter parker, he should have all of spider-man's abilities - no more or no less. while we don't want this community to be extremely limiting we felt this was the best compromise the make sure nothing is confusing for anyone.
supernatural rules are wide open. as long as they pertain to the rules of the character you're playing, you're fine. we know there's lore around vampires, werewolves, etc. that are all different. essentially those all exist and can exist in this world and like superpowers, your character can has to abide by the lore surrounding their abilities as supernatural creatures that exist in their fandom.
character genders, ages and names you are allowed to change your character's name but you're not required to. if you'd like to keep it, you can! whatever you'd be happy with is fine with us. you just have to make sure you have the character they're based off linked in your character bio/facts. you can make your character any age you'd like so long as they're 18+. as a trial, we are allowing you to genderbend in any way you'd like if you desire it - genderfluid and non-binary characters especially welcome.
character backgrounds can be as loosely or close to the character's as you'd like within reason. please remember a lot of canon stuff from your character's fandom likely didn't take place if it was major news. for example - the snap from the mcu never happened! obviously lord voldemort never killed lily and james potter - but if someone brings harry they can absolutely say a dark lord killed his parents and he survived (it doesn't have to be voldemort, and there never had to be a huge war for it to be true). if there is something from your character's past/world you'd like to incorporate that you think would be reasonable please ask first! we are very open to making anything work. an example of this (thanks to a user inquiry) would be dinosaurs inhabiting three islands off the coast of costa rica.
character personalities can be toyed with as well but we ask you attempt to keep basic attributes. we'd like people to write traits you don't see in other pb comms. if you'd like to water down particular hard traits (evil characters, etc) or have your character be more evolved that's absolutely okay.
relationship, family, friendship storyines are up to the discretion of the person writing the character. when holdig a character please remember that no one owes you anything in terms of storylines. in fact, we highly encourage and nearly require you to form storylines with characters outside of your character's fandom. willow rosenberg doesn't have to be buffy summers best friend. george weasley doesn't have to be ron weasley's brother - though we do encourage family lines more than anything else . han solo doesn't have to romantically get involved or even care about leia organa. while we understand some of these relationships are beloved to you, you should be avoiding the cliche and creating creative lines and appreciating organically developed storylines. we won't police people and we certainly won't tell you that your character can't date their on screen love interest because we know chemistry is chemistry but we do ask that that is not your goal.
pb appearances can match/not match your character as much as you'd like we just ask that you do not use an actor that portrays them. we strongly encourage creativity! if you think an actor would be perfect for them, that'd be fine, but we do love to see thoughtful, fun takes. as an example, it'd be fun to see a character like cinderella have a pb/look that isn't your typical blonde woman.
